Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine which stimulates and supports your body’s natural healing ability.

Homeopathy was developed over 200 years ago by Samuel Hahnemann, a brilliant and respected German Doctor, but its roots extend back as far as the ancient teachings of  Hippocrates and Paracelsus. Homeopathy is one of the most most widely used systems of medicine in the world today.

Sammuel Hahnemann became disillusioned by the practices of orthodox medicine, which at the time included blood letting and mercury, as he felt that often the side effects of the treatment were worse than the disease itself. As he was a gifted linguist and and mastered over seven languages, he turned to a profession translating medical texts. One day he was translating a text about the Peruvian bark (Cinchona) which was used to make quinine as a malarial treatment. The text attributed the therapeutic properties of Cinchona in treating malaria to its bitter and astringent properties. Sammuel Hahnemann, having an enquiring mind, wasn’t satisfied with this explantion as many other plants are bitter and yet they are not effective in the treatment of malaria. So Hahnemann took repeated doses of cinchona and found that he developed symptoms similar to malaria (but not the disease itself). The effects wore off and he returned to his former health but when he repeated the experiment the symptoms of malaria returned.

Hanemann realised from this experiment that a substance that can cause particular symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat a similar set of symptoms in a sick person i.e that “like cures like”.  The name Homeopathy reflects this as it is derived from from the Greek words “homoios” meaning similar and “pathos” meaning suffering.

Homeopathic remedies are selected based on your individual symptoms as we all express symptoms in a different way.

To accurately prescribe a remedy(ies) homeopaths take a detailed picture of your life story including your current symptoms  past health history, family medical history, current and previous medications, psychological and emotional factors, toxin exposure, exercise, stress levels and dietary habits.

A remedy is prescribed that, given in a material dose, would cause similar symptoms to those present in the individual. This substance is highly diluted and shaken in a carefully controlled way and when administered stimulates the body to correct the problem.
